
Class Descriptions
Tinies, Kinder Ballet and Jazz (ages 2-4)
A fun introduction to dance, mime and music, using a variety of creative activities. We gently introduce technique, to develop pre-dance skills including listening (music beat, following simple instructions), coordination, self-discipline, memory and creativity. Children learn about working in groups and gain enjoyment and appreciation of dance, music and mime as well as preparation for further dance training.
Ballet, Cecchetti method (ages 5+)
Classical ballet provides dancers with a solid foundation for all other dance forms. Students in Level 1 and up are encouraged to undertake two ballet classes per week allowing them to become more confident in their work and understand it better. Students wishing to undertake ballet exams MUST attend two ballet classes per week. Students may wish to attend one lesson per week to compliment other classes/activities that they may participate in (such as gymnastics).
Contemporary (ages 5+)
Contemporary dance is an evolving art form that blends elements from various dance styles, while incorporating unique, personal expressions. It emphasizes improvisation, floor work, and the use of space, often focusing on storytelling or exploring emotions and social themes.
Jazz (ages 5+)
Jazz dance is an energetic style known for its upbeat tempos, sharp footwork, and dynamic body isolations. Jazz dance often features quick turns, jumps, and expressive movements, and is commonly seen in musical theatre, commercials, and popular performances. The style is versatile, reflecting both traditional jazz techniques and modern interpretations, allowing for individual creativity and flair.
Tap (ages 5+)
Tap dance is a rhythmic and percussive style that creates music through footwork. It emphasizes timing, coordination, and intricate patterns. Often seen in musical theatre, tap dance turns the dancer’s movements into a unique, auditory experience.
Hip Hop (ages 7+)
Hip hop dance is an energetic, street-driven style that blends freestyle, breakdancing, and techniques like popping and locking. Characterised by bold, sharp movements and a focus on rhythm, it encourages self-expression. Rooted in urban culture, hip hop dance brings creative flair to the music it accompanies.
Acro (ages 5+)
Following the Acrobatic Arts syllabus, our classes focus on strength, conditioning and dance-based acrobatics. Students learn simple tumbling and poses to elevate their skills and artistry.

- Official Ballet Exams: Students have the chance to take part in official ballet exams conducted by Cecchetti Ballet Australia, offering a valuable experience for those looking to refine their technique and gain formal recognition.
- Schools Challenge Story-Dance Competition: Students can participate in the Schools Challenge, held at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, where they can showcase their creativity and skill in a fun & supportive environment.
- Petit Theatre Ballet Company: Students can be invited to join Petit Theatre Ballet Company, providing an opportunity for more advanced training and performance experience.
- Two Annual Concerts: Avant Dance Studio presents two major concerts each year:
- Mid-Year Concert (August): This is our ‘big concert’ of the year, with students preparing for months to perform in themed shows complete with specific costumes and props. Parents are encouraged to get involved, helping with various aspects like costumes and backstage duties.
- End of Year Concert (December): A more relaxed, fun performance to celebrate the close of the year, allowing students to enjoy the experience of performing in front of their friends and family.
These opportunities are designed to help every student gain confidence, learn valuable performance skills, and, most importantly, have fun while doing what they love.
